Department of International Relations (English)

International Relations which has been continuing its existence and validity since the day on which humankind existed, focused on power and military capacity and concept of realist school during the period of Cold War (1945-1991). With the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, International Relations has got closer to liberalism and had a more interdisciplinary scientific basis.

Today, relations between nations are not only between states but also between actors in the state (non-governmental organizations, individuals) and out of the state (international and regional organizations, multinational companies, out-of-state organizations). These relations also comprise the developments in and out of the state.

Within this point of view, Department of International Relations aims to educate our students in an interdisciplinary way which includes many branches like international relations, political science, sociology, history. Therefore, the syllabus of the department contains theoretical and field courses of International Relations and International Economic Relations as well as the courses in the field of  Political Science. The syllabus of the department includes mostly elective courses beginning from the fifth term in order that our students can take courses which are appropriate for their interests. Elective courses analyze existing international problems (like environment, energy, security) as field courses (like the USA, Russia, Central Asia, The European Union) do.

The introduction courses, in the first and second terms, aim to give basic information about the subjects which they will analyze in the following grades. In the third and fourth terms, students learn the basic courses of International Relations and Political Science and beginning from the fifth grade, they take field courses of International Relations.
According to our department, graduating from university with only one foreign language is not enough for our globalizing world. Within this framework, our students have to learn a second foreign language (like Russian, German, French, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Arabic) from the fifth term until the graduation. There are intensive Professional English courses in the syllabus to improve their English.

Our students will complete a part of their education abroad in the context of Erasmus Programme and within the cooperation agreements to be established with the universities abroad.

We aim our graduates to work in international and regional organizations, research centers, private sector, non-governmental organizations and other public institutions (especially in the units related to The European Union) as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
